Game of Thrones: Seven Kingdoms of Fashion Part One

Winter is coming... okay, no, it isn't, But the premier of Season 3 of Game of Thrones is! The show is a big hit, and the book series has a huge following, so it goes without saying that countless people are on the brink of losing their minds with sheer excitement about the new season. Heather and I are among those on the edge of sanity, so we decided to channel some of our nervous energy on putting together some looks inspired by some of our favorite characters on the show. In this post, I'm serving up the Stark ladies and Brienne of Tarth. Heather will feature her favorite character (can you guess who that is?) and some of the manly men.

Don't worry, we're not gonna suggest anyone go out and buy suits of armor or raid the Renaissance Fair. These are modern interpretations based on the characters, so put your fur cloak away. We're just going to play a game of fashion make believe and ask, if these characters were alive today, what would they be wearing? Also, what better way to get even deeper into fandom than to work some of your favorite character's look into your wardrobe?

Ready? Here we go...

Let's start with the Stark ladies - Catelyn, Sansa, and Arya. Three women in different stages of life - Catelyn, full on momma bear status, taking charge after her husband is killed and her eldest son vies for revenge and his shot at the throne. Sansa, the teenager who's life gets flipped upside-down and finds herself trapped with a crazy mother-in-law and her even crazier son. Arya, the pre-teen who went from tom boy to literally one-of-the-boys in order to escape her captors and find her way home.

With the family motto,  "Winter is coming", you know the Stark women are going to require some serious coats. Catelyn is the matriarch, so she's not going to sporting anything trendy or throw-away. She'd look for classic pieces in neutral colors that will have a long hanger life in her wardrobe. Small touches of fur will keep her in a Winterfell state of mind without going overboard and looking like Cruella de Vil. P.S. I know that first Jacket, the Anne Vest, is over $2,000 - don't freak! That's merely for inspiration, seek out something with a similar collar, and shape... you get the idea.

Catelyn Stark - Coats

Same rules apply to Catelyn's dressier look, even when she's turning it up a notch she'd go for classic silhouettes - nothing fussy or  overcomplicated. Lots of greens and browns, with some lovely jewel tones thrown in for some razzle dazzle.

For accessories, Catelyn wouldn't be blinged out in crazy jewelry or anything too flashy. Simple pieces that give a nod to her home and family would be much more her style. And just as in the dresses, we might see small pops of jewel tones, like the blue in the ring or the green straps of the sandal.

Sansa Stark is the romantic teenage drama queen, and I mean that in the best way possible. She was head over heels with the idea of a life with her handsome prince, but it didn't quite work out as planned. Her heartache hasn't dampened her style though, as many of us have learned - our hearts may be broken, but our style remains intact. If Sansa were around today, aside from posting angst filled Facebook updates, I believe she'd be a hardcore ModCloth girl. She'd be all over girly-girl dresses in pastels and cute prints, living her life like it's on a permanent an Instagram filter.

No Stark's wardrobe is complete without a selection of coats, and I think Sansa's whimsy would also show itself in her outerwear choices.
Sansa Stark - Coats

I keep referring to Sansa's accessories as "Sansa Sprinkles", and picturing it as glittery pastel confetti... look, I've been working a lot this week, okay? Guess who already bought the Cynthia Rowley silver heart ring? BOOM.

Our youngest Stark lady is Arya, she's the high-spirited tom boy who'd rather be wielding a sword on the battlefield than having tea with the ladies. You might think this means Arya would head to the boy's department for her clothes, but it's not that simple. In the first place, she's still a young lady. Secondly, she's Lady Stark, literally. That means, regardless of her rough and tumble personality, she was raised to be a Lady of the Family Stark. So, while Arya's style might be less frilly than Sansa's, you'll still see feminine touches - like a lacy racerback top, youthful prints, or slimmer cut boy-style jackets.
Arya Stark - Tops

Arya would probably be in pants 95% of the time, in addition to basic black and denim, she would amp up her look with wild colors or a funky print. Paired with a solid black or white top, and she'll look bad ass without trying too hard. Skinny jeans, leather pants, and patterned leggings have Arya written all over them.

Arya's choices in coats and jackets would be masculine style with a girly edge, you'll see the feminine influence in the color and cut. Bright cherry reds for big pops of color, and slim cut to avoid getting lost in an oversized bulky coat.

I included a couple of dresses among Arya's accessories, because even a tom boy is gonna have to make an appearance at a fancy(ish) party or nice dinner with the family. As for the rest of her accessories, Arya would keep it simple and fuss-free. Pieces that had meaning to her would finish up her look - like the wolf themed jewelery, a map cuff (to signify her journey home), and of course her beloved Needle themed earrings.

My queen, Brienne of Tarth! I love her character, and am obsessed with the stunning actress who portrays her, Gwendoline Christie. Brienne is take-no-prisoners Amazonian bad ass and I adore her. Similarly to Arya, her style might seem very masculine on the surface, but is much more complex when you take a closer look. Yes, she's in a suit of armor, but look closely at the textures, the colors, and the shape - it's not a straight-up man's suit of armor. Brienne's look is more androgynous than Arya's, but it's still easy to translate into a modern day woman's look. Metallics are an obvious nod to the armor, as is the peplum shape - they can work as 2013 interpretations to Brienne's warrior gear.

Brienne's choices for pants will be similar to Arya's, but with an edgier style. Slim cut skinnies in waxed denim, leather, and metallics.

My girl Brienne is played by someone who is 6'3", as is clearly no shrinking violet. When you're that tall, with a muscular/athletic build, you're going to stand out, so work it. Don't drown yourself in oversized tunics, go for more body-conscious styles and show off what'chu got. Long column dresses, sheath dresses, and off or one shoulder dresses - ARRGHH!

Accessories are a fun way to play around with Androgyny, it's easier to get your feet wet with small bits and pieces rather than the whole outfit. A leather moto jacket, chunky cuff or man's watch, and combat style boots... get the idea? The Gladiator sandal is pretty much over, but some of the less extreme styles are still pretty cute, especially for warm spring & summer days.
